Fit Tip Tuesday: Don’t Ditch the Carbs!

It seems that carbs have been given a bad rap of causing weight gain, however, the exact opposite is true! Did you know that eating the right kind of carbs – in the form of whole grains, fruit and vegetables – can actually help us lose weight and keep it off? Eating the right kind of carbohydrates is a necessary part of a well-balanced and healthy diet.


Carbohydrates are key for maximum energy, speed, stamina, concentration, and muscle recovery. They are vital for athletes and active individuals because they are the essential food for your body. Think of carbohydrates as the gas needed to fuel a car; without gas, a car won’t run. Likewise, without carbohydrates, your body will not have the fuel it requires to support your daily mental and physical activities. Incorporate carbohydrates that are high in resistant starch (resistant starch will digest slowly allowing you to feel full longer.) Foods high in resistant starch include bananas, oats, beans and lentils, potatoes, whole wheat pasta, barley, brown rice, peas, rye, etc. Carbohydrates should take up roughly one quarter of your plate. The rest of your plate should be filled with lean meats, low-fat dairy products, good fats and fruit and veggies!


As with any diet, the key to success is having healthy foods on hand at all times. Instead of chips and cookies around the house, try keeping a bowl of fresh fruit & veggies available for snack time or incorporate them with dinnertime!  Remember, carbs aren’t the enemy…refined sugars and processed foods are! So go get some good carbs!!!
